Role

The Transportation Analysis and Modeling team, as part of the Data and Modeling department, has one open position to support transportation model application.

The model application team members apply SANDAG’s Activity Based Model (ABM) in support of regional, local, and international border-related projects. They prepare transportation networks, perform model runs, interpret, and analyze results, and communicate model outputs through a wide range of data and mapping presentation formats. One model application position is open to support regional projects, corridor studies, and local plan updates. Overview of the Data and Modeling Department

SANDAG’s DSA, DAM, and RPM Departments support regional planning and decision making by collecting, managing, and analyzing data. Specifically, the teams are responsible for collecting original data to inform regional forecasts, models, and planning; compiling and ensuring the integrity of data from other sources for the same uses; meeting the software and database needs of the agency, as well as local, state, and federal public safety agencies; develop and manage a suite of transportation and socioeconomic modeling software platforms, completing regional demographic and economic forecasts; modeling the transportation needs of the region in the short‐ and long‐term; serving as the regional Criminal Justice Clearinghouse and conducting action research for public safety stakeholders; formulating actionable and transparent business intelligence strategies and implementing valuable initiatives related to big data, open data, data analytics, and economic research; and disseminating data and information to stakeholders in a clear and concise way that can inform policy and other decisions.

Job Responsibilities

• Coordinate with various teams to support transportation modeling and analysis required for long-range regional plans and highway and transit investment studies.

• Coordinate with external customers to support transportation modeling and analysis required for plan updates and development impacts.

• Analyze and understand model run forecasts including performance metrics and mapping, travel behavior and impacts.

• Maintain GIS networks of current and future roadway, transit, and active transportation projects.

• Develop and prepare transportation model data visualizations.

• Participation in quality assurance and quality control processes.

• Coordinate with the Data Solutions team to maintain transportation databases; ensure current and accurate traffic and passenger count data are being used.

• Perform analysis of large data sets and translate findings into digestible information to help inform various agency projects.

• Research, collect, and compile data; ensure accuracy of information; maintain databases, and documentation.

• Support the Transportation Analysis and Modeling teams with data archives.

• Prepare and present written, oral, and visual reports to policy and stakeholder committees, member agencies, community groups, private organizations, and members of the public.

• Coordinate the integration of transportation and land use in support of model scenarios; coordinate with economic and demographic research staff to determine data interactions.

• Perform various duties related to the maintenance and operation of SANDAG’s ABM.

• Develop and maintain custom data products to support transportation modeling.

Experience and Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree in transportation modeling, data science, data analytics, computer science, geography, mathematics, statistics, or a related field.

• Knowledge of the principles and practices of travel demand modeling and forecasting; experience in development and/or the application of activity based models is desirable.

• Experience programming in languages such as Python, R, and SQL; experience developing and maintaining custom software applications to support modeling functions.

• Experience using transportation modeling software, such as EMME, to support large, complex model development and applications projects.

• Experience with big/passive data and applications in travel demand modeling is preferable; research and/or modeling autonomous vehicles, transformative modes, and shared mobilities are desirable.

• Experience with data acquisition, compilation, and quality assurance/quality control methods; experience with relational databases such as SQL Server is desirable.

• Experience using GIS software to design transportation-related databases and mapping applications; experience with ESRI software to include feature creation, scripting, mapping, and spatial analytics; knowledge of transportation network coding principals is preferable.

• Assist in the maintenance of data used in modeling including traffic and transit counts and travel surveys. Perform custom analysis of travel data.

• Ability to communicate highly technical information effectively.

• Experience with data visualization tools such as Power BI, Plotly, Esri Experience Builder.

• Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to maintain a high level of accuracy.
